Is this a trendy way to retain employees? Is this the new wave of things to come?
I remember working in the dot-com boom around 2000, with offices letting you bring
home into work, i.e. dogs, goofy toys, etc, well, did it work? Cannot fault that
environment YET since VCs were the ones hyping things and coming up with false money
via stocks out of thin air.
I think ROWE is a natural progression of blurring the lines between home and work.
Many more people I know are starting to work from home, including myself, and ROWE
appeases those who have to work in a corporate enviornment, but wishes to work from
home.
Employee rentention is a growing problems in corporations as more and more people
are starting to realize that working for "the man" isn't bringing you any benefits
but a steady paycheck. With ROWE, employees has more incentives to do whatever the
heck they want when the sun is still up and get work done when nothing else is happening
outside our windows. While during that time, you have freedom to grow as a person.
The dark side: abuse of the system. For some managers, it'll cause resentment and
resulting in retalation, as some managers may resent the fact they're working in
the office and their subordinates are out having fun! Lastly, it could cause us
to lose our ability to learn management skills from watching good managers at work.
But on the other hand, we can do away with managers and speak directly to the "owners"
of a product or service.
